It was the focus of his work life for many years. He loved to travel with his wife Marion to as many parts of Australia as he could. He had the ability to ‘see’ the beauty of our land in such a way that he could photograph it for the delight of others. These photos are a legacy that he has left us. Wilpena Pound, one of the best known features in the Flinders Ranges, was discovered in 1850 by William Chase. It is a natural amphitheatre of mountains in the heart of the Flinders Ranges National Park.

Sky Trek Track, Willow Springs Station, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Willow Springs Station has 62km of private tracks that wind through the Flinders Ranges. It is a working sheep station of 70,000 acres. For a small fee you can enjoy an outing that requires around 7 hours and takes you through some spectacular scenery on exhilarating rugged tracks. Willow Springs Station was one of the early pastoral leases in the Flinders Ranges and was purchased by the Reynolds family in 1952. Willow Springs which was formerly known as Appealinna was taken up by Joseph Wills in 1856. Willow Springs remains a pastoral lease of 70000 acres or 28300 hectares.

Razor Back View, Willow Springs Station, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. We headed up to the Razor Back, and due to the stormy weather, conditions were very wet and slippery. September 2005.

I was aiming to get a photo that had atmosphere and we waited for a considerable amount of time watching the weather. A mixture of sunshine, passing rain, low clouds and the wet winding dirt road came together to make a strong image.

Arkaba Station woolshed, Flinders Ranges, South Australia.
Arkaba Station woolshed, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Built in 1856 the woolshed retains its historic charm while still operating as a modern shearing shed. Last century it served as a depot shed, with up to 40 blade shearers handling the flocks of many surrounding properties.

One of the oldest stone sheds in the country it contains original sheep pens made in local native pine, as well as an original cobblestone floor. About 7500 sheep now graze the 100 square miles of station property. September 2005.

Grass trees, Flinders Ranges, South Australia.
There are 66 species of grass tree and they are only found in Australia. They are a flowering plant – the flowers bloom on the spike in the middle. Flinders Ranges, South Australia. June 2022

Most grass trees respond to bushfires by flowering vigorously. They are slow growing, and can live for a long time – up to 450 years.

Although many of our contributors use professional camera equipment such as the Nikon Coolpix 1000, at ThisisAustralia we usually use our mobile phone cameras. A Samsung Galaxy Note 10 +, which has been great, and we will continue to use. We have also just purchased a Samsung S21 Ultra. This has been described as an ‘insanely brilliant camera with a phone attached’. So we are expecting some really good quality pics! Some of our contributors have also used the iPhone 13 with good success.
