Joe Mortelliti‘s life long love, from when he was first given a Brownie camera as a boy, was photography. It was the focus of his work life for many years. He loved to travel with his wife Marion to as many parts of Australia as he could. He had the ability to ‘see’ the beauty of our land in such a way that he could photograph it for the delight of others. These photos are a legacy that he has left us. Used by permission and with appreciation.
This foot bridge crosses the Wonnangatta River at the historic ruins of the Wonnangatta Station, Victorian High Country. The partly decomposed body of station manager James Barclay was found near this point.
The Wonnangatta Valley is surrounded by steep ranges. The historic ruins of the Wonnangatta Station are a popular 4wd destination.
The Wonnangatta murders (1917 –1918) which were never solved add mystery to this area of the Victorian High Country. Station manager James Barclay and the cook J Bamford were murdered. Barclay’s partly buried body was found on the station and Bamford’s body was later found on Howitt high plains.
Photographed from the footbridge at the historic ruins of the Wonnangatta Station, Victorian High Country. This is the immediate area of the river that the body of murdered station manager James Barclay was found after the 1917-1918 Wonnangatta murders.
A wooden bridge crosses the Haunted Stream at Dawson City. Now an area of lush growth, once was a town of around 3,000 people.
Dawson city was located on the Haunted Stream and was once a township of some 3 000 people. This track brings you to what was the site of the township.
This delightful 4wd track, photographed here at the site of Dawson City has some 52 crossings of the stream, with each view worth a picture.
It’s hard to imagine that once a township of 3 000 people lived here. The lush ferns of this area are as beautiful as any of those in the Otway Ranges. The morning light filtering through the trees and the lush ferns contrasting against the trees trunks are simply stunning.
Three thousand people, and this is all that is left. Shows that the environment is not at all fragile and is quite capable of regenerating over a relatively short time.
After the grisly murder of Ballarat Harry whose body parts were floated down the river, locals named the river the Haunted Stream as his ghost was said to frequent the area. We camped here with friends for New Year’s Eve 2004, but he did not make an appearance.
Lush green ferns are thick throughout this area.
The rich warm colours of the tree trunks and vivid green of the ferns simply sparkle in the early morning light.
