Gippsland

Gippsland covers much of south eastern Victoria. From the lush dairy lands around Leongatha in south Gippsland to the isolated and rugged areas of the far eastern Gippsland. A place of varying and extraordinary beauty!

Joe Mortelliti‘s life long love, from when he was first given a Brownie camera as a boy, was photography. It was the focus of his work life for many years. He loved to travel with his wife Marion to as many parts of Australia as he could. He had the ability to ‘see’ the beauty of our land in such a way that he could photograph it for the delight of others. These photos are a legacy that he has left us. Used by permission and with appreciation.

We stayed on a farmlet with friends, with this scene being just a portion of the panoramic view they enjoy from their porch. The rolling hills in this scene are under threat from being covered in 32 storey high wind farm turbines. 

It is my understanding that protest was not effective, as these beautiful hills now have collections of industrial turbines on them. So this is an historic picture of a scene that is much different now.

Located between Lakes Entrance and Orbost, the Stony Creek Trestle Bridge was built in 1916 and was reputed to be the most difficult rail project undertaken in Victoria due to the rugged terrain. It is built from red ironbark and grey box timber. At 247 metres long and 20 metres high the bridge is the largest standing bridge of it’s kind in Victoria. 

This bridge is part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail which follows the route of the former Orbost railway line for 96 kilometres. Because of it’s poor state of repair the bridge itself is closed to the public and the rail trail, visible to the left of the bridge, descends to the Stony Creek valley.

Spectacular falls in a very pleasant spot. At 59 metres it is said to be the tallest falls in Victoria. There are good facilities – picnic tables, ablutions block etc. 

The Mitchell River in Victoria is a favourite place for whitewater rafting. A spectacular view of the Amphitheatre Rapid.
